For three generations, our family has owned and operated Vanderwende Farms in Bridgeville, Delaware. Our farm sits alongside Route 404, a very popular means of travel to some of the region’s famous beaches — Lewes, Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, Fenwick and Ocean City.


The Legen-dairy Vanderwende Family

William and Ellen Vanderwende purchased the farm in 1954, starting with six cows and $35. The farm has since grown to close to 4,000 acres and more than 225 registered Holstein cows, which we milk twice a day. We take great pride in producing great quality milk, but we also take pride in being good stewards to the land. Among our many environmental practices are cover crop and nutrient management programs.


Committed to quality and consistency, our family works hard every day to create small-batch, homemade ice cream that’s farm fresh and full of flavor. Our premium ice cream is available in cups, cones or our homemade waffle cones. We also offer milkshakes, floats, sundaes, pints, quarts, banana splits and ice cream cakes!

  • How many cows do you have on your dairy farm?
    We currently have 225 that are milking and 250 calves and heifers.
  • What kind of cows are on your farm?
    We have Holsteins, Jersey's and a few Brown Swiss.
  • Are the cows on your farm given BST shots? (Bovine Somatotropin — This is given to cows to make them produce more milk.)
    No, our cows on the farm are not given BST shots.
  • Is your ice cream made at the creamery?
    Yes,our ice cream is made on a daily basis at Vanderwende Farm Creamery.
  • What day of the year is the most cheese consumed?
    Super Bowl Sunday
